At Tight Lines North, we offer 2 different courses
during the year, Trout Academy and Spey Academy. Below is a description
and itinerary of each course and what we teach.
Trout Academy
Did
you ever consider learning to fly fish, but were overwhelmed by its apparent
complexity? If so, Tight Lines has the solution for you. We will be running
several comprehensive 2-day Trout Academies to get you
started in fly fishing.
Each course will be taught by Andrew Moy and another licensed guide who will teach you everything you
need to know to be successful on your own. Topics such as reading water, nymph
fishing, dry fly fishing, streamer fishing, setting up your leader, knots,
casting, presentation and
entomology will be covered.
A 1/2 day guided wade trip at the end of day 1
will get you comfortable with the "classroom" knowledge you learned in the a.m.
The second day will be your on the water final exam where your newly learned
skills will be put to the test!
Taught here on the banks of the Beaverkill
River at Tight Lines North. The property has all of the amenities to make
this a relaxing and rewarding experience. Limited to 6 anglers per course.

Casting instruction on the lawn - Part I
We will be explaining the roll cast, hand position and basic fly
cast. We will be working on getting a good straight consistent cast
of 35-40 feet. |

Entomology / Fly
Selection Workshop.
Kick screen and
seine the Beaverkill for live insects. Watch presentation and have
discussion on the different aquatic insects and when and how the
fish feed on them. Match fly selection to insects. |

Casting Instruction
on the river - Part II
Add hauling into the basic
cast.
Add shooting line to the basic cast.
Add a reach cast into the basic cast. |

Barbecued lunch along the river. |

Knot tying and
leader set up for the afternoon on the river. |

Fly tying
demonstration to "match the hatch" for the day. |

Wade fish with your guide until dark.
We will be
working on the basics taught on the lawn and combine them with
indicator nymph fishing and dry fly fishing in the evening. |

Spey Academy
Spey
casting is an art which allows anglers to enhance their fly fishing while
achieving the ability to cast in tight quarters, change direction easily, cast
larger flies, cast further and add an element of fun and dimension to their
existing fly casting skills.
With 12 years of spey casting experience and now
having taught thousands to spey cast, Andrew Moy is offering a 2 day spey
casting academy on the banks of the Beaverkill River in upstate NY. This 2
day school will take you through the basics of spey casting, how to spey
cast/fish and manage a spey rod and line. Whether you'd like to use this
method of casting with a single or double handed rod for trout, steelhead,
salmon, or saltwater, Andrew will be able to deliver the knowledge needed to
obtain your goals.
The courses will be taught on the banks of the
lower Beaverkill River at Tight Lines
North. The property is on excellent trout water and has all of the amenities
to make this a very comfortable, relaxing and rewarding experience for everyone.

explain the basics, each spey cast, and answer any questions. |

skills learned earlier and target specific questions. He will also
demonstrate line management skills. |

End 2nd session and
begin looking for rising fish or head to another area for some
fishing. Have a hearty dinner on the river.

fishing and working the water. |
